Upriver Orchids was founded in 1997 on the rural slopes of
Mauna Kea a thousand feet in elevation above Papaikou,
Hawaii. Thomas E. Richmond, sole proprietor, derived the name
from his study of Conrad and Orchid lore. He notes that in
"Hearts of Darkness" travelers were always headed "upriver,"
to the "next station" in their elusive search for Kurz. The
Orchid hunters of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, in
the employ of wealthy European patrons, would also reply
"upriver" where asked by their competitors where their search next
led. An evasive answer in the historical period of
"Orchidmania." Today Upriver Orchids is housed in
12,00 feet of greenhouse space. Cooled by the tradewinds and
bathed by 200 plus inches of rain yearly, more than 50,000
plants thrive. Cultivation is focused on Oncidinae,
Intergenerics and Phalaenopsis. Ians are underway to
considerably expand the operation.
Mr. Richmond studied Botany at Humbolt State University and in
1994 was awarded the BA in ornamental Horticulture from the
University of Hawaii at Hilo. For the past 10 years he has
managed Ho owaiai Farms and Gardens and over one hundred acres of
Tropical plant, palms, and orchids. In 1999
Upriver Orchids received an award of Merit from the American Orchid
Society for Brsa Rex Upriver.
